Changing the Conversation on Sustainable Design
After working non-stop, double, triple duty, juggling many hats through the multiple pandemics of the past year and half, this summer I allowed myself time to breathe. What emerged from several weeks of simply sitting in thought, going on walks with friends, and attempting to draw diagrams of experiences was an untangling and re-weaving of thoughts, connections, theories and ideas that had been swirling around in me for some time. As I began to share this with others it became clear I needed to keep sharing, wider, farther.
For some time I have been teaching and advocating that we need to change the conversations on sustainable design - from designing stuff to designing systems, from individual to intersectional, from exclusive to inclusive, from sustainable to regenerative. I realized that if I want that conversation to change on a larger scale, like I believe is necessary, I need to have that conversation with more and more people.
The climate crisis is a wicked problem that requires complex understanding of systemic issues. It’s going to require mindset shifts of the masses. But in order to do that, the conversations we have about these complexities need to be accessible and understandable to a wider audience than the academics and scientists currently in the conversation.
With that I’m pleased to announce my newest project - Regenerating Conversations. A bi-weekly newsletter-conversation combining my passion for writing, creating, design, leadership and thought. My hope is that this project sparks conversations, connections, inquiry, ideas so that the conversations on sustainable design can expand. So that we can move the masses.
